International Conference on Nanotheranostics (ICoN 2013) and NANORESISTANCE Advanced Summer School

The Consortium of NANORESISTANCE is organizing the first International Conference on Nanotheranostics (ICoN 2013) at Larnaca, Cyprus 26-29 September 2013. The development of nanomedicine this past decade has spurred a flurry of developments in novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches which show great promise as a potential medicine paradigm for addressing current treatment roadblocks and persistent clinical needs, which are not successfully addressed with current methodologies. A nanotheranostics conference is an important initiative that could provide the forum for idea exchange and discussion to create a potential high-impact nanomedicine paradigm. The ICoN 2013 conference aims to provide the optimal venue to expand nanotheranostics research in a multidisciplinary environment which will bring together all the key researchers in the nanotheranostics field. Thematic Areas include:

  • The roadmap of nanotheranostics development - Patient-oriented approach
  • Emerging challenges for nanotheranostic applications
  • Nanoscience technologies for theranostics
  • Emphasis session on cancer nanotheranostics
  • Toxicology, regulatory aspects, and ethics

You can find more information in the Call for Abstracr (PDF) and the ICON 2013 webpage.

Prior to the 2013 International Conference on Nanotheranostics (ICoN 2013), the Marie Curie IAPP NANORESISTANCE consortium will be organizing an Advanced Summer School entitled "Managing Drug Resistance with Nanomedicine" intended for young researchers. The ASS will be held between 22 and 24 September 2013.

See the Advanced Summer School webpage for more information.

NANORESISTANCE Follow-up Meeting and 2nd Training Event, Athens, July 4-5, 2013

The NANORESISTANCE Follow-up Meeting was held in Athens on July 4, 2013. The Consortium group leaders presented a scientific follow-up of their respective workpages. In addition dissemination activities were also described. Finally, Mideterm Report issues were discussed in an interactive question, answer session.

The next day, July 5, 2013, the NANORESISTANCE 2nd training event took place. It included a number of very interesting scientific presentations such as

  • From Hit to lead optimization: Organic Synthesis as tool for drug discovery (Prof. E. Couladouros/proACTINA & AUA)
  • Advanced tools for drug screening: Surface Plasmon Resonance (P. Agianian/DUTH)
  • Making a drug candidate a drug product: Preclinical evaluation of small molecules (M. Denis/Biomedcode Hellas)
  • Making a drug candidate a drug product: Clinical Trials for new chemical entities (M. Nikolaidou/Pharmathen)
  • Challenges in formulating drug products (A.Diakidou/Pharmathen)
  • Regulatory framework in the European environment (L.Kalantzi/Pharmathen)
  • Defining targets, pathways and barriers in nanotherapeutics (A.Odysseos/EPOS Iasis)
  • Nanocarriers: technology and potential applications for targeted drug delivery (G.Korgas/NCSR "Demokritos)
  • Open Innovation within the FP7 framework (D. Yancopoulou/ PRAXI‐HELP‐FORWARD Network‐ National Contact Point FP7‐GREECE)

First Manegement Meeting and Self-training for researchers, London 3-5 March, 2013

The first management meeting of the consortium took place at London on March 3-5, 2013. The Consortium Steering Committee had a chance to review the project's progress and identify exciting new pathways to advance the project's goals. At the same time, the consortium's researcher had the opportunity to participate in an exciting self-training course orginized by the UCL team. Issues discussed included:

  • Leadership versus Management (Differences between leadership & management, when is it important to manage and when is it important to lead?)
  • Stress Management (The stress process – what is Stress?, Potential stressors, Coping Strategies)
  • Communication Skills Session (Examining and understanding different types of communication. Identifying barriers to effective communications)
  • Time Management (Current demands on researcher’s time. Identify time robbers and solutions. delegation and personal time management.

The NANORESTANCE projects starts with a kick-off meeting!

statueThe project’s kick-off meeting was held in Nicosia, Cyprus on 23-24/1/2012. It was attended by a an interdisciplinary and intersectoral team from the five partners, bringing together different disciplines in nanosciences, molecular oncology, molecular optics, biophysics, and organic chemistry. Moreover, the Marie Curie National Contact Point (NCP) of Cyprus, Dr. Pierantonios Papazoglou, was also present. The discussions focused on how the proposed methodological approach could most effectively address the key research questions. In particular, the participants discussed in detail existing knowledge, synthetic approaches, and functionalization techniques. The complexities of the IAPP management and training activities were also extensively explored. The findings from this meeting helped to shape the research agenda and to achieve a common understanding of the key challenges and requirements of NANORESISTANCE.
